Article: As the temperatures fall lower and lower below freezing at night, if you have running water in your greenhouse you better take some precautions. Of course, if you are heating it this time of year, no problem. First thing we do is to pull any hoses inside, along with their watering wands, timers or other attachments, because outside they freeze and split. Before it gets really cold, these items are brought inside and stored in the cellar. Hereafter I will start referring to the greenhouse as a house. The next thing to do if you are not running your house during the winter is drain everything that had water running through it. Anything that cannot be moved into a nonfreezing environment, like the cellar, must be drained. Then take a compressor and blow the lines out. We blow out the underground water lines that run between the houses as well. All the water pumps are disconnected, drained and brought inside our living house. It takes a little time, but pumps are on the expensive side and it is well worth the effort. Check out your plastic for little rips and tears. That winter wind and ice can turn them into major holes. There is a mending tape obtained through any greenhouse supply to repair small holes and rips. Use the mending tape to any little openings you find. I have to use a hair dryer to warm the house plastic up when the weather gets ahead of me, in order to make the tape stick. The tape can be kept warm inside of course, so don't waste your time using the hair dryer on it. Do a last fall cleaning, remove all debris and weeds. Make sure those little insects don't have a home for the winter. I must add something to this however. We have hoards of lady bugs trying to get inside for the winter. They are especially attracted to colors. Now a lady bug is a treasure to have in your house. Hang some bright colored cloths strips, plastic tape, whatever, in the doorway of your house, and some further inside, to lure them in. In my industry, we have to buy them and believe it or not, they are far from cheap. This way you get some free pest management . These are the only bugs I want to multiply as much as they can. In the spring they will eat the aphids, mites, and thrips that will invade at some time from down south before there are problems. Last, check out your doors, windows or what have you for openings, secure all their hinges and screws. Our houses shake like crazy during the winter from the wind and that shaking can easily loosen up screws. No fun chasing a door that has pulled off during a storm, or for that matter, it is no fun replacing it either. Now, when you want to start up in the late winter or early spring, you can feel reliably sure all will be well. So now go rest and check out the seed catalogs for the spring.
