Background
The term œorganic gardening” is of fairly recent origin. J.I. Rodale is credited with first using the word œorganic” to describe the œnatural method of gardening and farming” by his sonRobert Rodale. The senior Rodale used it in founding his publication, Organic Gardening and Farming, in 1942. The term œorganic farming” was first printed in the 1940 publication, Look to the Land, by Lord Northbourne.1 Not just a technique, but a philosophy as well, the components of what we now call organic gardening and farming have been practiced for centuries. Practice of good husbandry of the land was of significant importance to ancient writers such as Cato, Virgil, Pliny and Columella.2 The rotation of crops was recommended by Thomas Tusser in his classic and often reprinted work of 1580, Five Hundred Points of Good Husbandry3 In this country œgreen manuring and manures” was discussed in depth by John Wolfinger in the 1864 Report of the U.S. Commissioner of Agriculture4 two years after President Abraham Lincoln established the Department of Agriculture.

Michigan placed fourth nationally in value of wholesale sales of floriculture products in 1996. California, Florida, and Texas reported larger sales than Michigan. Reports from Michigan's 536 commercial growers indicated an estimated wholesale value of $182 million for all surveyed floriculture crops, down 1 percent from last year. This estimate includes summarized sales data as reported by growers with $100,000 or more in sales plus a calculated wholesale value of sales for operations with sales from $10,000 to $99,999.
Crop category breakdowns for Michigan operations with over $100,000 in sales and the percent change from 1995 were as follows:
* First, bedding/garden plants with $129 million in sales, down 2 percent;
* Second, flowering potted plants with $27.4 million in sales, up 5 percent;
* Third, cut flowers with $10.4 million in sales, up 2 percent; and
* Fourth, foliage for indoor or patio use with $3.7 million in sales,
down 1 percent.
Michigan leads the nation in value of sales for four floriculture crops. They are:
