I am sorry to tell you that there are no seeds for Phlox Subulata. They are grown by vegetative propagation, i.e., you either root a cutting or divide a clump up and make new ones. With Phlox Subulata, it is very easy to do. Hope you have fun with this one.

Sorry, I would send my husband down because he can kill anything, but unfortunately, he needs to work here. haha. I would suggest "Round Up", that kills most anything I have ever tried it on. It needs to hit the leaves and then travels down through the roots for a total kill. Let me know how you make out.

Herbal Vinegar is easy and fun to make. Take a bunch of fresh herbs or a combination of fresh herbs, place in a sterile bottle. Warm white vinegar to almost boiling, pour over herbs in bottle and seal. If you use a cork it is best to dip the cork closed bottle top in parafin to insure a tight seal. Let the vinegar stand for at least three weeks for the flavor to develop. Keep it in a cool, dry place. You can add hot peppers, garlic, peppercorns, etc. to make your own gourmet conbinations. A whirlwind tour of some gorgeous greenhouses for the home grower and the commercial grower!

Into my mailbox come many different advertisements. This time of year, the trade is trying to get us to expand, upgrade or add on. I drool over some of these structures and would like you to see some examples of what is out there.

Let me start with http://www.cpenterprise.com. Here you will see pictures of large, high and airy houses with one of the newest options, a retracting roof. This type of roof lets all that damp, stagnant air right out the top. No fans running up the electric bill to exchange the air inside. Efficient cooling on sunny days. This is one of the best innovations in plastic covered greenhouses. Notice the nice high sides on so many of these houses. I forfeit an entire row of tomatoes in our original house because we did not know enough to order higher sides. I don't get many tomatoes off a 3 foot high plant and my back doesn't like being in that space as well. Next time we have to replace the plastic, we will add more pipes to raise the sides up higher.

My next stop is http://turnergreenhouses.com/index.html. These are greenhouses for the hobbyist. They are adequate for anyone just wanting to putter around and give a lot of choices of size and equipment. Turner gives good information and advice on how, what and where.

Now off to fantasy land. Build a Victorian Conservatory. This beauty is presented with plans for every part of it, from walls to wiring. I showed this to hubby and said I would like this for my personal hideaway and for breeding new plants. Depending on how much you are going to grow in a greenhouse will determine this next procedure of seeding. Let's start with producing plants just for personal use.

Some seeds are so very tiny you might think they look like specks of pepper. These are the kind that make you want to invent a better way and many people have. The Precision English Seeder http://st2.yahoo.com/gardeners/-30-774.html is one of those inexpensive but wonderful alternatives to seeding with out pulling your hair out in frustration or trying to thin a mat of seedlings later . Where was this little beauty when we first started and I was hand seeding plugs trays. Yes I will define a plug tray. It is a plastic tray usually 10" x 20"x 1/2"deep or less, divided into little squares or circles that let each seed have its own little place. They can be divided into 32's up to over 512's.

Well, in the greenhouses it is time to be busy starting seeds for the season. That does take a little timing and planning because different flowers and vegetable have different lengths of time to germinate and grow to transplant stage. Most vegetables can go from seed to transplant stage in 8 weeks. Flowers can take from 8 weeks to 24 weeks. I make a chart of what I want to grow, how long it takes to germinate and how long it takes to be transplant size. After determining when I want the plants ready, I count back on the calendar for each one's seeding date. This information is usually on the back of your package of seeds, along with the ideal soil temperature for best results. A little hint, most seeds do not need covering at all if you can keep them moist. Flowers usually will germinate better this way(especially Impatiens). If you can't find an ideal soil temp on the packages, 68 degrees F usually works. If you cannot guarantee that the seed will keep moist, cover with soil to no more than twice the width of the seed. For all, give them a light pat to give good contact with the soil. We cannot possibly do all that by hand, so we water them in lightly with a super-gentle breaker head on the hose. I am sure you all are using sterile containers and a sterile light planting medium.

Some seeds need a pretreatment to make them germinate, like freezing for 48 hours, or refrigerating for 3 days, roughing up the surface of others, soaking for some. Please check out http://www.seedsonline.com/chap2.htm Seeds School by Seeds Unique for different methods to ensure your success.

I found this short but informative article on Coldframes If you have followed my articles, you might note a few areas that need to be done a little differently.

If one wishes to overwinter a perennial, the perennial must stay dormant. Most perennials do require a little rest and some require vernalization (a cold treatment long enough for the plant to at least think it has gone through winter). Now the ones you have planted in the ground are not the perennials I am discussing here. These would be perhaps perennials you seeded last summer, and grew on through the fall. They are in the greenhouse in a bed or in a pot. So, the mention of a warm, sunny day in a cold frame bothers me. I do not want my plants to wake up and then freeze on a daily basis. Also, if the plants are not dormant, I have to water them. I have tackled this problem in several ways.

One is to leave the cold frame door open for the winter. That way it does not warm up too much. The bad thing is that if we get very cold weather, I am just scatterbrained enough to forget to close the door.LupinesRussell Mix

Another way, which is much preferred, is to cover the plants with microfoam (a thick foam blanket) or some type of mulch, like wood chips. You lay any tall plants on their sides back in the fall, after they have gone to sleep. Cover all of them, and most will survive quite well till Spring. Can't Afford New, Buy Used!

Someone somewhere will be selling a greenhouse they have outgrown or have become tired of. I think it is a good idea to browse around and see what is offered.

My first stop was to Green House Trade Industry On Line, where I clicked on Classified Ads, then Equipment http://www.greenhouse-bbs.com/clasequi.htm. There is alot of great stuff on this page. Scroll down, some is too big, but there are lots of good deals in here. The one big catch is, this page does not get updated as often as it should. You may write off to find the item has already been sold. Next I hopped to one of my favorite haunts at h2othouse. They have a section on used greenhouses for sale and a list of wanted to buy, http://www.h2othouse.com/html/used_greenhouses.html

Next, keep checking your local agricultural bulletins, newspapers and sheriff's auctions. These are likely places to find some good deals. The horticultural industry has a high failure rate therefore you are more than likely to find some auctions. You could get wild and post ads looking for a used greenhouse. Sometimes if people have not sold one after advertising a week or so, they give up. This also could motivate a seller who is still undecided.

Check out the bulletin boards at all your garden centers and Agway-type centers. It is a natural place to post used greenhouse equipment.

For you do-it-yourselfers, a hardware store or a fencing company going out of business might just offer you the deal of the century on pipe and connectors, which just happens to be the stuff greenhouses are made of. You can make a peaked top greenhouse with these, no bending needed. Just like playing with your old erector set. Rent a pipe bender if you want curved ribs.
